Alternate Pathway Program Helps International Radiologists Advance Their Careers
The American Board of Radiology (ABR) has specifically designed the Alternate Pathway Program to give foreign-trained radiologists an alternate route to independent radiology practice without having to undergo radiology residency in the United States. Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, Department of Radiology, has offered this pathway to selected candidates for many years.
To be accepted to this program, candidates must have completed diagnostic radiology training in a residency program outside the U.S and Canada, as well as demonstrate exceptional work ethic, high standard clinical expertise, and excellent research skills that complement the mission of Northwestern University’s Department of Radiology. After four years of fellowship/faculty experience in the same training institution, the foreign trained radiologist becomes eligible to sit for the radiology board examinations conducted by the ABR.
This program has been significantly supported by Dr. James Carr, who himself has gone through the pathway. Due to his exceptional support, this program now boasts an official, dedicated fellowship leadership to ensure effective management.
Dr. Hatice Savas, the Director of the ABR Alternate Pathway Program, and Michelle Bolivar, Manager of Education, oversee the program and are responsible for selecting potential candidates for interviews. After the consensus opinion from relevant fellowship Program Directors, Dr. Savas creates a specialized plan that helps each selected candidate gain clinical and research experience necessary for their board eligibility and future goals.
As Dr. Savas explains, this program encourages radiologists to become subspecialized in their radiology discipline and support the high demand for radiologists within the U.S. and overseas once their training is complete. By obtaining ABR certification, Dr. Savas envisions this program supporting the radiology workforce and simultaneously enhancing Northwestern’s academic and clinical impact on both a domestic and global scale.
