Breast Imaging Fellowship

The Department of Radiology at Northwestern Medicine offers six one-year Advanced Specialty Training Program (ASTP) fellowship positions in breast imaging at the Lynn Sage Comprehensive Breast Center (LSCBC). Fellows are appointed to the full-time coterminous faculty of Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine as an Instructor of Radiology for a term of one year. LSCBC is one of the largest, most advanced breast centers in the country, with cutting-edge equipment and an examination volume exceeding 90,000 studies per year.

Clinical Training

Fellows receive training in digital breast tomosynthesis, breast ultrasound, breast magnetic resonance imaging, and all image-guided interventional techniques. The weekly schedule consists of assignments to diagnostic, screening, interventional, MRI, and academic rotations. Breast-specific pager call is taken on a weekly basis, with no in-house weekend or overnight call.  Moonlighting opportunities in breast imaging are available during the second half of the year.

Conferences/Electives

Attendance at weekly multidisciplinary breast conferences and radiology pathology concordance conferences provide a comprehensive clinical perspective on breast cancer care. Training is also enriched by a formal didactic lecture series, monthly M&M conference, and Journal Club.  Electives in breast pathology and breast surgery are provided to ensure that fellows gain experience in these closely related specialties, with optional electives tailored to the individual’s interests.

Research/Education

The fellowship program provides opportunities to engage in scholarly research and medical education. Fellows interested in research will have the opportunity to work closely with faculty for submission of abstracts and publications, and are provided time to attend the annual RSNA meeting.  Fellows actively participate in medical student education through a dedicated didactic lecture series.
