Curriculum
Common Procedures
As with any training program, volume translates to experience. Residents must participate in a minimum of 1,000 invasive imaging and image-guided vascular and non-vascular interventional procedures during their training. Overall, the total number of interventional radiology (IR) procedures performed at the three Northwestern training sites exceeds 15,000 per year, providing ample volume for our residents. Interventional radiologists interact with nearly every medical specialty. Common procedures include:
- Hepatobiliary
- Perc chole drains
- Biliary decompression/stenting
- TIPS
- Women’s Health
- Pelvic Congestion
- Uterine Fibroid Embolization
- Urologic
- Nephrostomy
- Ureteral stent
- Varicocele
- Nephrology
- Dialysis access
- Fistula/graft maintenance
- Neuro/Spine
- Pain management
- Vertebroplasty
- Stroke management
- Intracranial aneurysm
Training Sites
By rotating through three hospitals, trainees are ensured comprehensive exposure to the full scope of IR.
Northwestern Memorial Hospital
The primary training site, Northwestern Memorial Hospital (NMH), has nearly 1,000 beds. Among other well-recognized specialties, it is one of the busiest transplant hospitals in the country, a level I trauma center and has one of the largest oncology programs in the region, ensuring that IR trainees are involved in the most innovative and complex IR procedures.
Major clinical programs include:
- Interventional Oncology
- Uterine Fibroid Embolization
- Complex IVC Filter Management
- Chronic Venous Occlusive Disease
- TIPS and Portal-Vein-Recanalization TIPS
- Hepatobiliary & Transplant Interventions
- Arteriovenous Malformations
- Venous Insufficiency
- Dialysis Interventions
Jesse Brown VA Hospital
The Jesse Brown VA Hospital is located approximately 5 miles west of NMH and offers IR trainees the experience of a typical, yet busy, VA hospital.
Major clinical programs include:
- Interventional Oncology
- Peripheral Vascular Disease
- Dialysis Interventions
Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago
Lurie Children’s, located on the downtown Northwestern Medical Campus, is a leading children’s hospital and the largest in the Midwest.
Major clinical programs include:
- Transplant & Hepatobiliary Interventions
- Arteriovenous Malformations
- Musculoskeletal Interventions
